Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4 April 1972. She was raised by her grandmother and mother. The only child she has. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. There, Scott worked two jobs as she was learning about secondary education. She hoped to become an instructor of English in a secondary school. After 3 years of working as a teacher's aide and studying the possibility to become a high school English teacher was cut short. Following her first gigs performing at live poetry performances, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. She was first outed in the midst of a Roots Show. After that, she secured collaborations with stars such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained knowledge of the stage when she appeared in the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She was the first signed artist on the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
